Dr. Maureen Storey is the Director of the Center for Food, Nutrition, and Agriculture Policy (CFNAP), which is an independent, affiliated center of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland—College Park. She is also a Research Professor at the University of Maryland and an Affiliate Research Professor of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, University of Maryland. In 2005-2006, Dr. Storey served as Interim Director of the University of Maryland/U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN).

Prior to joining the University of Maryland, she was Director of the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy at Virginia Tech (CFNP). Dr. Storey joined CFNP in 1998 when the center was affiliated with Georgetown University and she became its third director in 2003. In addition, she was a private sector advisor to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson at the 56th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland and was a member of the Secretary’s expert consultation on obesity. In 2004, she received the Phi Beta Delta International Service Award for faculty. She served as an expert on sugars and obesity to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and she has been a volunteer with the American Heart Association.

Prior to joining the Center, Dr. Storey was Senior Vice President of Health and Nutrition Marketing at Hayes, Domenici & Associates—a public relations and marketing firm in McLean, Virginia. She was an executive with the Kellogg Company, where she held several management positions in nutrition research, business development, and nutrition marketing and communications over a 10-year career.

Dr. Storey received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota and was a National Cancer Institute postdoctoral training grant recipient at the University Wisconsin-Madison. She is a member of the American Society for Nutrition, the Institute for Food Technologists, and the American Dietetic Association. She has published scientific papers on such topics as beverage consumption related to nutrient intake and obesity, added sugars and diet quality, mineral interactions in development of mammary cancer, and regulatory considerations involving functional foods and nutraceuticals.
